The best time to visit Kashmir for pleasant weather and fewer crowds is during the months of March to October. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October) offer mild temperatures, blooming gardens, and fewer tourists. However, if you want to experience snowfall and winter sports activities, then December to February is ideal, but it can get quite cold and crowded during this time.
Altitude sickness can be a concern when visiting high-altitude destinations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Travelers should take precautions such as staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activities upon arrival, and acclimatizing gradually to the altitude. It’s also advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before the trip and consider carrying medications like acetazolamide (Diamox) for prevention.
Must-visit attractions in Srinagar include the Mughal Gardens (Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi), Shankaracharya Temple, Dal Lake, and the old city’s narrow alleys and markets. In Gulmarg, visitors shouldn’t miss the Gondola ride for panoramic views, Khilanmarg, Alpather Lake, and the Golf Course. Pahalgam offers attractions like Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, Lidder River, and Chandanwari, the starting point for the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage.
Kashmir offers a variety of vegetarian food options, especially in popular tourist areas like Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam. Travelers with dietary restrictions can find vegetarian dishes such as dum aloo, rajma, chole, paneer dishes, vegetable biryani, and various types of bread like naan and roti readily available in local restaurants and eateries. Additionally, many hotels and restaurants offer customizable menus to accommodate specific dietary needs upon request.
